In 2006, Norfolk Southern Railway Co. donated a 31 mile tract of abandoned railways for the establishment of a new state park. High Bridge Trail State Park opened to the public in 2008, featuring a long bridge for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The bridge itself is:
- More than 2,400 feet long
- 125 feet above the Appomattox River
- The longest recreational bridge in Virginia
- Among the longest in the United States
For parking closest to the bridge, go to River Road in Farmville, VA, 3 miles east of North Main Street.
